These days, built-in wireless capabilities have become standard equipment available on most of the laptops and home computers due to many reasons. One of the obvious and main reasons is the cost. In order to stay ahead in technological curve the manufacturers need to add wireless option to all machines.
An important question that arises here is – Is your laptop or home computer wireless enabled? This is how you can check if your computer has wireless capabilities or not.
Laptops
If your laptop has wireless networking built-in then you don’t need to do anything. Intel Centrino Mobile Technology is nothing else than a marketing name for Intel Pentium M processor and Intel’s’ Pro Wireless card. If you have Intel Centrino Mobile Technology then make sure that it has a ‘Centrino’ sticker on it.
Also note that Intel Centrino Mobile Technology increases the battery life and let the manufacturers build the computers smaller. If you still don’t find anything related to Intel Centrino Mobile Technology, don’t worry till your laptop has a free card slot.
Desktop Computers
If you are not sure whether the desktop computer has a wireless connection or not, just turn it around and try to find a small aerial sticking out. If it’s there, you have wireless enabled and if there’s nothing, you may have a wireless device in the computer. The best way to check the wireless capacity is by using Windows.
Windows to check the Wireless Capacity
A better way to check the wireless capacity is via ‘Windows - Device Manager’. To start, right click on ‘My Computer’ select ‘Manage’ and then click ‘Device Manager’. An installation list will appear on the right half of the screen. Look below ‘Network adapters’ and ignore anything that says 10/100 or Ethernet. If still there’s something left it could be a wireless device.
If you assume that you have a wireless device, but it is giving a yellow warning sign along with its name in the ‘Device Manager’, double click on it to check the problem. Windows must then tell why the device is not working currently and can even advise you to go through its troubleshooter program.
Put in the ‘driver CD’ if it’s a driver problem. If you are unable to find the driver CD that came along with computer – search on internet. First go to your computer’s manufacturer’s website and search for the name of the wireless device. When you find the correct driver, download and follow the instructions carefully. So is your laptop or home computer wireless enabled or not
