So today’s computer job was setting up someones wireless network. The computer like always had alot of programs running in the background, which of course had to be ended. So after ridding the computer of those by going into msconfig, which I will post about later and I’m sure will be in the archive
But the problem with installing the wireless network was turning off the modem, which you have to do every time you install a network using a router. This time it was a regular linksys wireless G router, which is probably one of if not the best type of routers.
So the modem was a motorola surfboard SB5120 and I had trouble turning it off effectively. I unplugged the power cord and it seemed as if the power went out, but after trying to install the modem, it still did not work. What was the trick to getting this router installed?
The trick was that the motorola surfboard SB5120 had a battery pack inside it, and that is why just unplugging the cord was not enough to turn it off. So after I took out the battery pack, it was able to fully shut off. The reason for the battery pack you ask? It is because they had comcast digital voice so the battery pack in the modem allows them to still have a working phone line even if the power goes out.
I installed the wireless network and set them up with a WEP based wireless 64 bit encryption. Oh I also setup their Xbox to work on the internet, which was pretty easy and I’ll probably post a full article about how to do that in a few days.
