So today’s computer job was for a very nice lady who needed home computer repair. She called and had mentioned that her monitor would flicker on and off. She had also said that after her monitor would flicker, her computer would sometimes randomly restart itself.
Not a good thing to happen to a computer huh? Well that’s what I was thinking when I arrived and found that she had described it perfectly to me. Her computer was shutting off just as she described. Now I knew I had to figure out what the problem was, and I knew it was probably the computer’s hardware. The reason is that most of the time when a computer is flat our restarting, it is most likely a hardware issue.
The first thing to do is turn the computer off and unplug everything but the mouse and keyboard and monitor. Then boot up and completely uninstall the video driver. You can do this by going to the start menu then the control pane in your home computer. From there go into System and then the Device Manage. Then find your Display Adapter and right click and hit uninstall.
Ok now that we have uninstalled our display adapter, which is our video card driver by the way, we need to download a new one, an updated one if available. So lets search on Google! Search for your video card driver by typing in the name of the video card, or going to the manufacturers website. If you do not know what kind of video card you have, you will have to take it out and look at what it says on the card itself. Remember you might have to call the manufacturer.
So now lets install the new video driver with the newly downloaded file. Then lets restart the computer and lets hope that this updated new driver was the fix, as it is a lot of the time.
If it is not the fix, the first thing I would suggest is to run to your nearest electronics store and pickup a video card and toss it in, and that will most likely fix the problem. The video card you had could of just malfunctioned for any number of reasons. And aside from that, if your computer is still not working, I would look into calling a home computer repair technician and/or buying a new computer.
Remember, a lot of times, the cost of repairing a computer that is more than a year old is monetarily not worth it. It’s a hard fact for people to understand or believe, but most times it is true.
So good luck diagnosing your monitor flickering problems and tune in next time, when we fix another nice persons home computer!
